No matter how tip top you keep up with your oral hygiene, you can’t beat a hygienist appointment. Whilst our dental team can carry out a scale and polish during your check up if you don’t require any further work, it is not nearly as extensive as a dedicated hygienist. Looking after your teeth and gums is not only a fundamental part of your overall health, they can also have a serious impact on your confidence. By visiting our hygienist regularly, we’ll ensure you continue to keep the healthy smile you’re more than happy to flash. Here’s 10 reasons you should be making an appointment.
1. Reaching those hard to get spots
No matter how good you are at brushing your teeth, there will still be areas that can’t quite get the same careful treatment. Either in between teeth or behind the very back ones, these can often be neglected. Our hygienist uses special instruments to attack any hidden plaque and tartar build up.
2. Detecting dental problems
It may have been a while since your last dental check-up or an issue may have arisen suddenly. Either way, the hygienist can spot underlying problems such as tooth decay, faulty fillings and any infection around your gums.
3. Stop bleeding gums
If your gums are inflamed or bleed when you brush, this is a glaring sign of gum disease. Easily treated if caught early, you will be shown how to properly clean around your gums and prevent this in future.
4. Spot cancer warning signs
During your appointment, you will also be screened for oral cancer. This type of cancer is entirely curable if detected early. We will also chat you through the main risk factors and give you advice on how to reduce them. If you are a tobacco smoker, hygienist appointments will be even more highly recommended than usual.
5. Prevent other diseases
Gum disease and poor oral health can be linked to other ailments and syndromes including diabetes and heart disease. Your full oral health screening will uncover symptoms related to these diseases.
6. Breathe easier
Even by brushing and using mouthwash regularly, your breath may not stay fresh for long. If you feel conscience of your breath, you may be suffering from halitosis. During a hygiene appointment a deep clean of your teeth and under the gum line should alleviate most causes of bad breath.
7. Keep your teeth!
Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. During the later stages, teeth can become very painful and infected. At this point there is often no other option than to remove the tooth. Our hygienists priority is to ensure this does not happen.
8. Whiten your teeth
A bit part of your hygienist appointment is stain removal. Some stains caused by coffee, red wine or tobacco cannot be removed by brushing alone and require professional treatment to restore your teeth to their natural whiteness.
9. Improve your confidence
With all this combined, you have teeth which not only feel cleaner but look whiter too! When your teeth are in the best possible condition, you won’t be able to help smiling in turn improving your mood and self-esteem.
10. Avoid trips to the dentist
It may sound like a contradiction but the more frequently you visit the hygienist, the LESS frequently you will need to visit your dentist. As small tooth decay signs can be easily spotted and taken care off, larger issues will be prevented.
